On the 24 November 2021, South Africa brought to the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO), a new strain of a mutated vibrant of the covid 19 virus.
The WHO designated it as a variant of concern and named it after omicron, the fifteenth letter in the Greek alphabet.
Researchers worldwide are racing to understand the threat that the variant — now confirmed in more than 20 countries — poses to the world. Yet it might take scientists weeks to paint a more complete picture of Omicron, and to gain an understanding of its transmissibility and severity, as well as its potential to evade vaccines and cause reinfections.
Heavily mutated Omicron variant puts scientists on alert.
God have mercy
