The Governor of Lagos State, Nigeria, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called off the proposed Lagos peace walk scheduled for December 2021.
The governor cited the spread of Omicron COVID-19 as the reason for the latest decision.
He spoke via a statement he signed on Thursday, November 9, 2021, that he is “constrained to stand down all preparations for the Walk for Peace” so as not to “endanger the life of any Lagosian” amid the outbreak of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
Governor Sanwo-Olu who
said the suspension of the Peace Walk was necessary due to “unseen enemy called COVID-19 which began to ravage the world and indeed our nation.” Also added that as the Incident Commander in the quest to protect the lives of Lagos residents, “we subjected ourselves to the dictates of science.”
In the month of November 30th, 2021, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had called on some celebrities who are known to have stood for the EndSARS protest in the state to join him on a peace walk for "the healing of Lagos".
Some of the celebrities that were invited are: Folarin Falana (Falz), Debo Adebayo (Mr. Marcaroni), Dele Farotimi, Temitope Majekodunmi, Segun Awosanya (Segalink), Adedotun (Just Detoun), Seun Kuti, Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu; and Commander of Rapid Response Squad (RRS), CSP Yinka Egbeyemi.
Justice must be served for EndSARS victims before peace; this is the reason, the Lagos State Governor's invitation was declined by Mr. Macaroni, Falz and some arrowheads of the EndSARS protest.
Some other youth groups declared support for the governor, saying they would walk with him.
