#ENDSARS - New Salary for Nigerian Police Force

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a new salary structure for officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, made this known to State House correspondents at the end of the Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to him, major highlight of the increase is the provision of a 20 per cent peculiar allowance for the police.

“I am particularly very happy today to inform Nigerians that the Federal Executive Council has approved the review and upgrading of the take home pay of police personnel in this country.

The allowance will increase police personnel take home pay by 20 per cent of their present earning, Mr Dingyadi said.

He said the salary increase was part of efforts of the Muhammadu Buhari administration to meet the demands of the #EndSARS protesters.

The #ENDSARS saw the Nigerian youth take to the streets in protest across the Country in 2020. It was an out cry against police brutality, particularly the activities of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Concerns of unlawful arrests, torture, extortion and extrajudicial killings by members of (SARS).

It was the largest public demonstration led by youths in Nigeria.

It all started as a small campaign, after a viral video of a man allegedly killed by SARS operatives. It quickly catapulted into a nationwide protest in a matter of days.

A part of the protester's five-point demands, is a call for an increase in the salaries of police officers. The protesters linked the endless extortion, corruption, and the viciousness of the men on black to poor remuneration, training and welfare.

Others however, included compensations for the families of all deceased victims of police brutality.

Below, a summary of the #ENDSARS
5 points agenda:

1. Compensations for victims of police brutality

2. Investigation of police misconduct and prosecution of the indicted

3. Release of arrested protesters

4. Increase in the salaries of police officers

5. Psychological evaluation of all disbanded SARS officers before redeployment.
