Kaduna State is set to commence another competency test for Primary school teachers.
A similar exercise was conducted almost four years ago. The first exercise led to the dismissal of 22,000 unqualified teachers and the recruitment of 25,000 qualified ones.
The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Tijjani Abdullahi said the competency test is not aimed at sacking any teacher but to identify gaps in the subject areas and proffer solutions for the purpose of training and retaining teachers in Kaduna State.
“The teachers that are here will see the difference in the approach of the testing,” the State SUBEB Chairman told journalists.
The Kaduna State Ministry of Education in 2017 sacked over 20,000 teachers, who they say, are unqualified and that the sacked teachers failed a test conducted to determine their competency.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers, the Nigerian Labour Congress ( NLC), took sides with the sacked teachers. This led to the two Labour unions embarking on a peaceful protest against the Government.
Despite the dust it generated, the government stuck to its guns and subsequently went ahead to employ about 25,000 new qualified teachers to fill the gaps.
This approach the state Government says, will foster quality education across the States and promote learning in basic schools.
