Dowen College - The House of Representatives calls on the Inspector General of Police to take over case.

Following the death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lekki in Lagos State

The House of Representatives has called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Baba, to take over the case.

It also called for stricter rules and regulations for schools, by the Federal Government and the need to look into boarding schools and their facilities.

The alleged torture and eventual death of Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lagos, from injuries sustained during an assault by five of his colleagues who wanted to initiate him into cultism, has dealt a big blow to the Nation at large

The school had claimed he died after sustaining an injury during a football match.

Unyime Idem a member of the House, at the plenary today, Tuesday, 7th December 2021, moved a motion of urgent public importance, titled:

"A Call to Condemn the Trend of Inhumane Treatment in Nigerian Boarding Schools Across the Country and Comprehensive Investigation into the Activities of Nigerian Boarding School System."

Adopting the motion, the lawmakers “condemn in strong terms, the recent incidences of inhuman treatment and abuses happening in the boarding schools across the country."

They urged the Federal Ministry of Education to set up strict guidelines for the operations of boarding schools across the country.

The House also mandated the “Inspector-General of Police to immediately commission and take over the investigation, prosecution and punishment of the perpetrators of the identified heinous crimes.”

In addition, the House of Representatives Committee on  Education, Youth Development and Women Affairs and Social Development was mandated by the House  to monitor the investigation, whilst setting up a committee to brainstorm and come up with ways to curb any future occurrence of an incidence of this nature and report to the House within two weeks.

    I hope this will not give room for the wealthy parents of the killers to have easy access to influencing the case with cash. However, I trust the competence of the Inspector General of Police to ensure justice at its fullest without favor. God take charge.

The CBN Reverses Its Decision And Sets New Limit On New Naira Note Withdrawal

The Central Bank of Nigeria had initially stopped the withdrawal of the new Naira notes over the counter, directing commercial banks to instead dispense the cash through their Auto Teller Machines (ATM) to the public. Thursday, 2, February 2023, the apex bank has now backtracked on that decision, it is informing the commercial banks to resume over-the-counter withdrawal of the new N200, N500 and N1,000 notes. President Buhari, Federal Government, Donates $1m To Afghanistan

  The Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED) has faulted the Federal Government’s $1 million donations to Afghanistan’s Taliban government, saying the move made no economic sense, according to the Guardian news. The group also condemned the high cost of the nomination form for presidential aspirants by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that it would pave way for corruption to subsist.
