A Time In History

History: Did you Know that Forks Were Considered to be Sacrilegious in the past? Here's why. A   cutlery or kitchenware, a fork is a utensil, now usually made of metal, whose long handle terminates in a head that branches into several narrow and often slightly curved tines with which one can spear foods either to hold them to cut with a knife or to lift them to the mouth. In an article about the origins of the fork, by Chad Ward, at Leite's Culinaria. It turns out the fork is a relatively new invention. Although the first forks were used in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, the two-tined instruments were used only as cooking tools at the time. It wasn't until the Middle Ages that a smaller version was used for eating by wealthy families of the Middle East and Byzantine Empire. What the fork? Forks, the widely used eating utensils, were once seen as blasphemous. They were first introduced in Italy in the 11th Century.  These spiked spaghetti-twirling instruments were seen as a

Biden confirms end of Omicron travel curbs for African nations. US president says restrictions are ‘no longer necessary’, as new COVID-19 variant becomes dominant strain. US President Joe Biden has formally ordered an end to travel restrictions on eight southern African countries imposed last month to slow the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant, saying that the curbs are “no longer necessary to protect the public health”. Biden issued a proclamation on Tuesday repealing the restrictions on travel into the United States from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi. The ban will be lifted at 12:01am (05:01 GMT) on Friday. The Biden administration had announced its intention to undo the travel restrictions late last week, as health officials announced Omicron already had become the dominant strain of the virus in the country. "Importantly, scientific experts have determined that people who are vaccinated against COVID-19 are protecte

Hair Growth, The Rosemary Oil Myth

Can Rosemary Oil Really Make Your Hair Grow? Here's the Deal. Just as I was about to give up on my hopes of having longer, thicker, fuller hair, I heard some pretty convincing testimonials about a little something called rosemary oil. Rumor has it this essential oil (aka rosemary oil leaf extract, or rosmarinus officinalis leaf oil, if you're looking at an ingredient label) can supposedly prevent hair loss, reduce breakage and split ends, and improve hair growth. Before I got my hopes up (and before I spent money on something that would end up in the pile of ineffective hair supplements under my bathroom sink), I turned to the experts to find out what's for real and what's fiction. Here, Yoram Harth, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of the newly launched MDhair, and Gretchen Friese, BosleyMD certified trichologist, share the science behind using rosemary oil for hair growth and what to know before giving it a try yourself. Is rosemary oil good for hair grow

In the clip, Olympia dances in front of the camera while wearing a pink skirt and white top. Williams, 40, sits behind her dressed in the same outfit, with the mother-daughter duo both sporting braids, as well as "matching" sunglasses and headbands (thanks to an Instagram filter). In the clip, Williams laughs as Olympia shows off her dance moves then turns around to face her mom before Williams tells her, "I don't need to be in the camera. You got too much pizazz, girl," and shifts out of the frame. The video wraps up with a few more seconds of Olympia dancing before it comes to an end. The pro athlete captioned her post, "My morning. New Super Eagles Head Coach Appointed

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed a new Super Eagles coach.  Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The NFF endorsed a proposal by its Technical and Development sub-committee for the appointment of the new coach. His appointment follows the sacking of Gernot Rohr earlier this December, 2021. Fake Housing Advert, Woman Duped of £1,000

Fake housing advertisement on Facebook left woman penniless. A woman who was duped out of £1,000 by a fake property advert on Facebook has warned househunters to be extra vigilant before handing over any cash. Sasha, 60, said the scam left her penniless after she tried to find a property for her son in Stoke-on-Trent. Action Fraud said more than 4,300 people have reported being conned out of a total of £6.4m through rental scams - many online - since January. "I felt physically sick when the penny dropped," she said. It is thought that lockdown also contributed to the number of people being duped because many househunters could only view properties virtually. Sasha, not her real name, is on disability benefits and borrowed money to find her son somewhere to live after splitting from his girlfriend. She spotted what looked like a suitable home being advertised on Facebook, but the "agent" told her the landlord was away and if she wanted it quickly, she could have a

Cristiano Ronaldo-Divided Opinion Over Statue In India

Cristiano Ronaldo statue divides opinion in India. A newly unveiled statue of Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo is dividing opinion in India. Placed in the western Goa state, where football is hugely popular, officials hope it will inspire young people. But Goa is also a former Portuguese colony, and it is 60 years since the state was freed from Portugal. Critics say local football players should have been honoured, especially since several past and present members of India's national team are Goan. Very disappointed to hear of the statue of Ronaldo being erected. Learn to take pride in our own icons like Samir Naik and Bruno Coutinho," a local Goan told the IANS news agency. During the statue's inauguration, some people waved black flags in protest, the Times of India newspaper reported. Portugal's football team is popular in Goa, and due to its colonial past, many locals have lived in Portugal or have family there. But some people in the Indian state feel it

YOU AND YOUR HEALTH - A "Rainbow Diet"- It is Good for You

Dieticians are urging Australians to eat a "rainbow" diet to boost nutrition, and new colourful breeds of vegetables are becoming available to make that task easier.  Healthy eating does apply to everyone.  Dietician Simone Austin said eating a variety of colours increased the amount of nutrients the human body can absorb.  "Any colours in vegetables, but particularly the purples and dark greens show that they've got lots of antioxidants in them and antioxidants are particularly good for us," she said. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by the body processing food and reacting to the environment. "Antioxidants can reduce inflammation in our body ... lots of the diseases and chronic conditions, like diabetes or heart disease, are often linked to that inflammation in our body over a long time," Ms Austin said. But don't just purchase all purple foods; we want to eat a rainbow." Ms Austin said there were
