Lagos Danfo Drivers On Strike - Commuters Suffer

Commuters in Lagos, Nigeria, trekked for several hours to get to their destinations as commercial bus drivers in Lagos State, under the aegis of the Joint Drivers’ Welfare Association of Nigeria, JDWAN, commenced a seven-day strike.

Other transporters, commercial tricycles, known as Keke Marwa and minibuses called Korope, took advantage of the strike and hiked transport fares by 100 percent. The strike action commenced yesterday.

The bus drivers are calling on the state government to stop extortion of their members by men of motor parks and garages management, miscreants (agberos) and government officials in the state.

A meeting was held by the aggrieved transporters and the Lagos State government but the meeting ended in a deadlock.

The ongoing strike action has paralyzed commercial and human activities.

JDWAN had directed other bodies, such as Ibile Drivers Stakeholders Association of Nigeria, DSWAN; Mega City Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria, MCDWA; Federal Assisted Mass Transit Incorporation, FAMTI; Owners, Drivers and Conductors Association, ODCA; Commercial Bus Drivers and Owners Operators of Lagos, CBDOP and Mini Bus Drivers Welfare Association, MNDWA, to comply with the strike.

JDWAN’s National Leader, Akintade Abiodun, said some representatives of the association had met with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola, and Parks Management Liaison Officer, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, in the company of JDWAN’s Legal Adviser, Mr. Ayo Ademiluyi.

He noted that the essence of the meeting was defeated by the threat messages received by the drivers.

A Total Reversal, Reverse Electricity Tariff Cut Now, Demand Nigerians

On Monday, Nigerians are demanding a total reversal of electricity tariff cut - the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s reduction of the tariff payable by Band A customers from N225/kWh to N206.8/kWh. Organised labour, the Nigerian Bar Association and the House of Representatives, have also rejected the hike in tariff payable by about 1.9 million consumers. Subsidy on electricity was withdrawn completely from the tariff of consumers in the Band A category, which constitutes about 15 per cent of the total 12.82 million power consumers across the country. The Federal Government said it would save N1.5tn, as a result of the tariff hike, adding that Band A customers would enjoy up to 20 hours of power supply daily. North Korea Confirms First COVID Outbreak

North Korea has confirmed its first COVID-19 death, and says hundreds of thousands of people have “fever”, in the first indication of the scale of the outbreak in its largely unvaccinated population.
