The Duchess Of Sussex, Meghan Markle, Slammed For Comparing Herself To Nelson Mandela


MEGHAN MARKLE has been met with backlash, as Nelson Mandela's grandson has hit out at the Duchess.

Speaking to the Cut Magazine, in her most recent interview, Meghan recounted a trip to the 2019 London premiere of the live-action version of The Lion King. 

She said a cast member from South Africa pulled her aside at the premiere, she explained: 

"He looked at me, and he's just like light.

"He said, 'I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.'"

But Nelson Mandela's grandson, Zwelivelile 'Mandla' Mandela, questioned the remarks.

Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela, an African National Congress MP, whose grandfather (Nelson Mandela) served 27 years in prison before going on to lead his country.

Zwelivelile ‘Mandla’ Mandela said he was “surprised” by her comments in her interview with The Cut, and said his grandfather’s release from jail “cannot be equated to as the same” as her royal wedding.

He added: “Every day there are people who want to be Nelson Mandela, either comparing themselves with him or wanting to emulate him. But before people can regard themselves as Nelson Mandelas, they should be looking into the work that he did and be able to be champions and advocates of the work that he himself championed.”

Madiba’s celebration was based on overcoming 350 years of colonialism with 60 years of a brutal apartheid regime in South Africa. So It cannot be equated to as the same,” he said.

He added that the celebration of his grandfather’s freedom was far more important her celebration of marrying “a white prince”.

“We are still bearing scars of the past. But they were a product of the majority of our people being brought out onto the streets to exercise the right of voting for the first time,” he added.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for standing up against the government and opposing Apartheid. He was freed in 1990 and became president in 1994.
