"The Queen remains comfortable" at Balmoral Castle, the palace added. The queen, 96, celebrated her platinum jubilee earlier this year.

Prince Charles, Camilla, Dutchess of Cornwall and Prince William are said to be traveling to Balmoral Castle to be by her side. Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, are also reported to be heading there as well.

"My thoughts -- and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom -- are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time."

The health announcement comes after Queen Elizabeth II decided to postpone a meeting with senior government officials on Wednesday after experiencing a full day of activities the day before.

The Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in England, said in a statement that he was “concerned to hear the news about the Her Majesty The Queen’s health,” and offered prayers for her and her family.
