At least eight killed in crush at Cameroon stadium, hosting the Africa Cup of Nations.

At least eight people have been killed and 38 injured in a crush outside an Africa Cup of Nations football match in Cameroon.

Videos showed screaming fans being crushed at an entry gate to the Paul Biya stadium in the capital Yaoundé.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes outside the ground as thousands of fans struggled to get access.

Two children, aged six and 14, are among the dead, and seven people were seriously injured.

Cameroonian President Paul Biya ordered an investigation into the "tragic incident". The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has also launched its investigation.

Officials said about 50,000 people tried to attend the match.

The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 but it was not meant to be more than 80% full for the game because of Covid restrictions.

Nick Cavell, a producer for BBC Africa Sport, was at the match and says news of the crush did not seem to filter through to the crowd until there were reports on social media.

Images on social media show fans clambering over fences, rushing past checkpoints and trampling on unconscious supporters. Others show some trying to resuscitate their fellow fans.

A Total Reversal, Reverse Electricity Tariff Cut Now, Demand Nigerians

On Monday, Nigerians are demanding a total reversal of electricity tariff cut - the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s reduction of the tariff payable by Band A customers from N225/kWh to N206.8/kWh. Organised labour, the Nigerian Bar Association and the House of Representatives, have also rejected the hike in tariff payable by about 1.9 million consumers. Subsidy on electricity was withdrawn completely from the tariff of consumers in the Band A category, which constitutes about 15 per cent of the total 12.82 million power consumers across the country. The Federal Government said it would save N1.5tn, as a result of the tariff hike, adding that Band A customers would enjoy up to 20 hours of power supply daily. The government took the decision which became effective on April 3, 2024. Organised labour has however issued a two-week ultimatum demanding the reversal of the tariff hike. Nigeria Supreme Court New Legal Year - 72 legal practitioners become Senior Advocates of Nigeria

Today, Wednesday 8th December 2021 marks the commencement of a new legal year for the Nigeria supreme court. The Chief Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, swore in 72 legal practitioners who were recently elevated to the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN). The main Courtroom of the Apex court in Abuja is where the ceremony took place. Out of the 159 senior lawyers that applied for the rank during the year, only 72 made it to the list, of which 10 were academic appointees and 62 advocate appointees.
