The Queens-Maya Angelou-First Black Woman Featured On US Quarter Coin

The first Black woman featured on US quarter coin is Maya Angelou.

The poet and activist is shown with outstretched arms on the coin, which the Treasury Department has begun to circulate.

The 25-cent coin, which shows Angelou with outstretched arms, went into circulation on Monday.

Angelou, author of “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” will also be the first figure commemorated through the American Women Quarters Program, which was signed into law in January 2021.

Angelou, who was born in Missouri in 1928, was an essayist and poet who worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the Civil Rights Movement.

Angelou, who delivered the poem at former President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration, died in 2014.

Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, Make Charity Donation To Nigeria's Flood Victims

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex have donated an undisclosed sum to charities working in Nigeria via their Foundation, the Archewell Foundation. The amount donated (unspecified) is for victims devastated by the flood ravishing parts of Nigeria. About 1.3 million people have been displaced by the floods. The flooding has killed over 600 people and injuring more than 2,400. According to Sky News, in a press release, a Spotify representative confirmed the Archewell Foundation had made donations to both UNICEF and Save the Children. While Nigeria typically experiences seasonal flooding, the floods are the worst the country has seen since the 2012 major flood which displaced more than 2.1 million people. The spokesperson said the donations, of an undisclosed amount, would “help provide relief following devastating floods wreaking havoc in Nigeria”.
