Sokoto State, On A 24 Hour Curfew

The Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal has imposed a 24 hour curfew in Sokoto State, following street protest, which later turned violent.

In another development, the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) forum Simon Lalong and Governor of Plateau State in a statement, condemned the killing of Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto who was killed on allegations of blasphemy.

The governors’ communicated their concerns over the undesirable development. As the adoption of self-help in addressing grievances whether religious or otherwise, could only lead to further chaos that could threaten law and order as well as the general peace and security of the society, expressed Lanlong.

The Northern Governor Forum while commiserating with the family of the victim urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that the law takes its full course on anyone found wanting or culpable in the circumstance.

The forum also extended its support and commiserations to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, especially for the proactive efforts to restore normalcy following reports of the hijack of a peaceful protest which later turned violent and led to the imposition of a curfew in the Sokoto metropolis.

Citizens of the region and Nigerians were also called upon to show love, tolerance, and respect for one another irrespective of faith, ethnicity, or other affiliations.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Kukah, said he is safe after protests rocked parts of Sokoto city over the detention of two persons linked to the gruesome killing of Deborah Samuel, this is  contrary to some online report that his house was set ablaze.

Kukah also applauded Governor Aminu Tambuwal for acting promptly by asserting a 24 hour curfew and called for calm.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), national president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, during the African Trade Union Alliance meeting in Abuja. Has issued a threat to embark on a nationwide strike without any notification if the pump price of fuel sells above the current price of N617. Media reports indicated an imminent increase in the price to N720.
