The social media was engulfed with videos of men stoning and flogging a motionless body wrapped in red attire.

Channel News reports, the victim is Deborah Samuel, a level-two student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto.

And according to the Nigerian police, the late Deborah was accused of making a social media post that blasphemed the holy prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The police said the students forcefully removed the victim from the security room where she was hidden by the school authorities, killed her and burnt the building. The students banded together with miscreants and barricaded the Sokoto/Jega road.

Some of the videos also captured a man facing the camera and claiming that he killed and burnt her, while brandishing a matchbox.

In a statement signed by spokesperson, Sanusi Abubakar, the police said it has arrested two persons in connection with the killing. He said the police mobilised to scene of the incident upon receiving the information led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operation and other commanders to bring the situation under control.

According to Mr. Abubakar, the school has been shut down and additional police personnel deployed to the premises.

He also noted that the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, Kamaldeen Kola Okunlola, has appealed to members of the public to go about their lawful activities and not panic as the situation is under control.

Mathew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, has condemned the killing of the female student, he said;

"We condemn this incident in the strongest terms and call on the authorities to investigate this tragedy and ensure that all the culprits are brought to book. The only obligation that is owed her immediate family, her fellow students and the school authorities is the assurance that those who are guilty of this inhuman act, no matter their motivation, are punished according to our extant laws of the land. This has nothing to do with religion. Christians have lived peacefully with their Muslim neighbours here in Sokoto over the years. This matter must be treated as a criminal act and the law must take its cause.

“Meanwhile, I wish to call on all Christians in Sokoto and around to remain calm and to please pray for the repose of the soul of Ms Deborah. It is the first obligation that we owe her. May God grant her eternal rest and console her immediate family.”

The Sultanate Council likewise condemned the killing of the student.

The police further vowed that the suspects in the viral video on Twitter were sighted, they will be pinned promptly.

  1. It's really so sad that we no longer have respect for human life. How will a group of students turn round to kill one of their own in cold blood? May God comfort her family and grant her eternal rest amen.
