The World Bank in a statement published on its website on Friday, revealed that a fresh $700m loan for Nigeria to enhance adolescent girls’ learning and empowerment has been approved by the Bank. The new loan serves as additional funding for an ongoing project known as the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment. Nigeria is said to have over 12 million to 15 million out-of-school children in the school-age group, with many of them in Northern Nigeria. Between 2020-2021, the rise in insecurity surrounding schools affected an estimated one million children. The Nigerian Nation Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited says some management staff will be exiting the firm effective September 19, 2023. The company, in a statement signed by its management on Monday, said the reorganisation is in line with commitments to scale up its capabilities “through targeted talent management and equal opportunity for all Nigerians”. NNPC said only staff members with less than 15 months to retirement will be affected. "In our bid to pursue effective organisational renewal to support the delivery of our strategic business objectives, it has become imperative to rejuvenate our workforce,” the NNPC said. “Consequently, in addition to the recent exit of three (3) Executive Vice Presidents, other Management Staff with less than fifteen (15) months to statutory retirement will be exiting the Company effective 19th September 2023.”

Following hours of rainfall, in most parts of Lagos, a building with over 500 rooms, housing hundreds of residents located at Agboye Estate on Oduntan Street, Ketu, has collapsed in the Ketu area of Lagos State. The residents experienced more mayhem while still trying to salvage their belongings, the building crumbled again, destroying another structure inside the compound before collapsing completely. Nigeria witnessed a total of 553 building collapses between 1974 and ending on April 13, 2023, according to the latest report by the Building Collapse Prevention Guild. The report indicated that Lagos State had recorded a high number of collapses with over 326 buildings caving in the last 49 years. It showed that 326 collapsed buildings in Lagos represented 59.05 per cent of a total of 553 recorded cases in the country during this period.
