Oh Dear! Will Smith Tenders His Resignation From The Academy Membership Over Chris Rock Slap

Prolific American actor and Oscar winner, Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences following a slap he gave Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.

The actor, who is facing possible expulsion or suspension, chose to resign instead.

The organization said Smith faced suspension, expulsion or other sanctions. Will was given 

15 days to provide a written response explaining his actions. 

Will Smith, the group said had violated the Academy’s standards of conduct.

In a response to the Academy, Will Smith issued a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday afternoon, April 1.

It reads: 

"I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home."

The statement continues:

"I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film."

"So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason."

A Total Reversal, Reverse Electricity Tariff Cut Now, Demand Nigerians

On Monday, Nigerians are demanding a total reversal of electricity tariff cut - the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s reduction of the tariff payable by Band A customers from N225/kWh to N206.8/kWh. Organised labour, the Nigerian Bar Association and the House of Representatives, have also rejected the hike in tariff payable by about 1.9 million consumers. North Korea has confirmed its first COVID-19 death, and says hundreds of thousands of people have “fever”, in the first indication of the scale of the outbreak in its largely unvaccinated population.
