The First Lady, Aisha Buhari Denies Posting The Release Saying That The Central Bank of Nigeria Has Extended The Validity Of The Old Naira Note By 70 Days. In another post on the same verified Instagram handle, Mrs. Buhari denied posting the release that : Nigeria (CBN) had extended the validity period for old N,1000 and N500 notes by another 70 days. She alleged her account had been hacked.  The message, which was later tagged as fake news by the CBN, was sighted on the First Lady’s verified Instagram handle on Tuesday but was later pulled down.

Earlier on today, Tuesday, the president’s wife, Aisha Buhari, shared a statement allegedly issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) extending the validity of old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes to May 1, 2023. The statement release purported that the CBN gave the directive on Tuesday, February 21 after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari. “Due to the current and unpleasant situation in Nigeria, in line with Mr. President, after having a closed meeting with him on the 20th of February, 2023, Central Bank of Nigeria has been directed to only reissue and recirculate the old N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 70 days up to May 1, 2023. It read. “Members of the public should therefore continue to spend the old notes,” the statement read. However in a reaction to the publication shared by the first lady, the CBN in a statement signed by Nwanisobi, dismissed the report . On Thursday morning the Nigerian President announced via a nationwide broadsheet to Nigerians, that the N500, N1,000 are no longer valid. He also apologised to Nigerians over the difficulties experienced in accessing the scarce newly redesigned Naira notes. Last week, the Supreme Court had given an interim order for the continued use of all the old notes until it finally rules on the suit filed by some state governors. However while sitting on Wednesday, the Supreme Court did not reverse that order, hence its validity remains. But the court adjourned the suit to 22 February. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, announced plans to redesign the N200, N500, N1,000 notes in October 2022, Nigerians were told to deposit their old notes before January 31, 2023, when the old notes would cease to be legal tender. The deadline was, thereafter, shifted to February 10, 2022 but many Nigerians have found it difficult to obtain the new naira notes from the banks. On Tuesday, in a meeting with the traders in Kaduna, Governor Nasir El-Rufai, told traders in the state to continue using the old naira notes for their transactions. He hinted that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) if elected, he will review the naira redesign policy. “Stop changing your money and tell everyone to stop taking money to banks. The Central Bank of Nigeria had initially stopped the withdrawal of the new Naira notes over the counter, directing commercial banks to instead dispense the cash through their Auto Teller Machines (ATM) to the public. Thursday, 2, February 2023, the apex bank has now backtracked on that decision, it is informing the commercial banks to resume over-the-counter withdrawal of the new N200, N500 and N1,000 notes. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has eventually extended the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes at commercial banks by 10 days. Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, said the new deadline is February 10, 2023, he described as it as “grace period."  This was made known via a press statement issued on Sunday, Therefore, Nigerians will still be able to deposit their old notes directly with the CBN until February 17, 2023  Nigerians are having a difficult time due to the inability to swap their old notes for the new designs as the January 31 deadline approaches.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, the duly elected governor of Osun state has been sacked. The Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo has sacked the governor. It declared that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Adeleke and issued same to former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola. The tribunal in a split document of two to one gave this decision. Delivering its judgement on Friday, the tribunal held that the governorship election was characterized by over-voting, adding that after deducting the excessive votes, Oyetola’s figures rose to 314, 921, while Adeleke’s came down to 290, 266. The tribunal led by Justice Terste Kume, therefore, instructed INEC to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Adeleke and his deputy, Kola Adewusi. It directed that the certificate of return be issued to Oyetola instead.
