N100m Ransom for Ekiti Schoolchildren, Teachers - Abductors Demand

Five pupils and four member of staff of the Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, were abducted by gunmen who waylaid their school bus conveying 25 pupils home after school hours, in the Emure community in Ekiti State. The kidnappers have demanded N100m ransom for the release of the nine victims who were taken away. The principal of the secondary section of the school, Boje Olanireti, has confirmed the demand for ransom by the kidnappers who abducted victims. Throwing more light on how the incident occurred, Olanireti explained that the kidnapping occurred about a five-minute drive from the school. She said, “Immediately the school closed at 3pm, and by the time we gathered all the children, it was already 3:30pm. It was that time that they moved. So, the incident happened between 3:30pm and 4pm. The school is in a suburb of Emure village, so they were going back home in Eporo. CBN Injects US$500 Million Into Various Economic Sectors

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has released US$500 million to various sectors of the economy.                Olayemi Cardoso, The Governor of CBN Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, the Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department at the CBN, stated this in Abuja on Monday, Janaury 29. She assured Nigerians that the Management of the CBN was dedicated to settling all legitimate forex arrears within a short time frame via addressing the backlog of verified foreign exchange (forex) transactions. A study from Sweden which has found that a blood test can detect the earliest stages of Alzheimer's disease, reports the BBC, while expansiating on it's report that;                   Image Credit: Scientific American   The Times says it could have "huge implications" for routinely screening the over-50s for their risk of the disease. The test - the paper reports - can detect the "proteins" which can cause Alzheimer's which build up in the brain for 10 to 15 years before symptoms start to show, and allowed researchers to assess how "likely" someone was to develop the disease. According to the Daily Express, the brand new diagnostic tool has been praised by experts as it may "ultimately bring us closer towards a cure for dementia". The Daily Telegraph takes the view the "simple and cheap method" can measure how likely people are to develop the illness up to 15 years before they show symptoms, citing research from the study.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is now rocked by a major crisis as yesterday, three member-countries-Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, have announced their withdrawal from the body, this comes into effect after lengthy disagreement and rejection of military rule in West Africa by ECOWAS. However, the 49-year old ECOWAS claimed that it was yet to get notification about the withdrawal announced by governments of the three countries. The three Sahel nations said in a joint statement on state televisions that they had made a “sovereign decision” to leave ECOWAS “without delay”. The juntas said they have “decided in complete sovereignty on the immediate withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the ECOWAS,” alleging that the bloc has “moved away from the ideals of its founding fathers and pan-Africanism” after nearly 50 years of its establishment. Oscar Pistorius, Granted Parole

Oscar Pistorius, known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fiber prosthetic legs, will be released from prison on Friday after receiving parole. Oscar Pistorius He became eligible for parole in March 2023 after serving half of his 13-year, five-month sentence for murder. On Monday, the United Kingdom via it's Home Office, announced that it had commenced the implementation of its policy stopping overseas students, Nigerian students and other foreigners from bringing family members as dependants through the study visa route. From today, new overseas students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK. Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarships students will be exempt,” the Home Office said. Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria will hike their tariffs with effect from January 1, 2024 as reported by Parrot Nigeria. The source noted that the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had already invited distribution companies for a meeting on the development.
