The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reached a decision to postpone Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections to March 18, 2023. The postponement was due to the commission’s inability to promptly commence reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines utilized during the February 25 presidential election to enable their use in the state elections. INEC was earlier restrained from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until due inspection was conducted and Certified True Copies (CTC) issued to candidates who are challenging the outcome of the presidential election.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Friday was in the Oyo state, he was invited by the Oyo State Governor, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, to take part in the inauguration of the Oyo State 5,000,000-litre Aviation Fuel Dispensing Depot at the Ibadan Airport in the Alakia area of the state. A man who sold potato chips cooked in dirty oil from a power transformer has been sentenced by a court in Kenya. Elijah Mwangi Muthoga was arrested just over a year ago in possession of 11 litres of the oil at a hotel he runs in Nyandarua County. He must now serve a two year prison sentence or pay a fine of 200,000 shillings ($1,570; £1,300). A harsher sentence of 10 years in prison or a 10m shilling fine was handed to Zachary Mwangi Gitau, the man found guilty of procuring the oil for Muthoga by vandalising a power transformer. Seven states controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party  – namely  Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Taraba and Sokoto, which filed a suit against the Federal Government at the Supreme Court, challenging the declaration of All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President-elect, have discontinued the suit. In the suit which had the attorneys-general of the seven states as plaintiffs and the Attorney General of the Federation as defendant, the seven states had asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the just concluded general elections, as they claimed that the declaration of  Tinubu did not follow the Electoral Act and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s guidelines, especially the uploading of results to the IREV through the BVAS.  They also expressed fear of a potential breakdown of public order and civil disobedience. Bola Ahmed Tinubu was on Wednesday declared the winner of Nigeria’s controversial presidential elections, as opposition leaders decried the polls as rigged and called for a fresh vote. Tinubu, 70, represents the ruling All Progressives Congress party, which received close to 8.8 million votes – about 36.6% of the total, according to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Mahmood Yakubu. Mr Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates who took part in the election. He scored a total of 8,794,726 votes, the highest of all the candidates, thus meeting the first constitutional requirement to be declared the winner. He also scored over 25 per cent of the votes cast in 30 states, more than the 24 states constitutionally required. At least 32 people have died and dozens more were injured in the head-on collision between two trains near the city of Larissa on Tuesday night, reports the BBC. Rescuers have been working through the night to find survivors. The passenger train had been travelling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki when it crashed head-on with the other freight train, leading to a fire in at least one of the carriages. It is being described as the worst train crash Greece has ever seen, but the cause of the collision is not yet known. The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, has won the Obio-Akpor, the Local Government Area of Governor Nyesom Wike in Rivers State by a landslide. Tinubu polled 80,239 votes to defeat the Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, who came a distant second with 3,829 and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who got 368 votes.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party said results had been manipulated, compromising the poll. The ruling party's candidate Bola Amhed Tinubu is presently in the lead with just over 44% of the vote, official figures released so far show. The PDP's Atiku Abubakar and Labour's Peter Obi were the main opposition presidential candidates in the elections held on Saturday. The opposition parties were critical of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its handling of the electronic voting system. As of Monday night, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared collated results in 20 states. Tinubu is ahead with 5,862,453 votes, while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has secured 4,288,434 votes so far. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, is currently in third place with 2,834,932; Rabiu Kwankwaso, New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, polled 1,315,549. Nigeria has 36 states.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party has been declared the winner of the presidential election in Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous state. Mr Obi secured 582,454 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Tinubu of the APC, who scored 572, 606 votes. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP came third with 75,750 votes. A total of 1,347,152 people were accredited for the election in Lagos, a state where Mr Tinubu has a lot of political control and influence.
