The Central Bank of Nigeria had initially stopped the withdrawal of the new Naira notes over the counter, directing commercial banks to instead dispense the cash through their Auto Teller Machines (ATM) to the public. Thursday, 2, February 2023, the apex bank has now backtracked on that decision, it is informing the commercial banks to resume over-the-counter withdrawal of the new N200, N500 and N1,000 notes. The Central Bank of Nigeria, has set a new directive of a maximum daily payout limit of N20,000, consisting of redesigned Naira notes, to each customer.  “In line with this resolve, the Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has directed deposit money banks (DMBs) to commence the payment of the redesigned Naira notes over the counter, subject to a maximum daily payout limit of N20,000.  “We also admonish members of the public to embrace and adopt other payment channels for their transactions.  “The Naira is our legal tender and symbol of national pride. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has eventually extended the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes at commercial banks by 10 days. Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, said the new deadline is February 10, 2023, he described as it as “grace period."  This was made known via a press statement issued on Sunday, Therefore, Nigerians will still be able to deposit their old notes directly with the CBN until February 17, 2023  Nigerians are having a difficult time due to the inability to swap their old notes for the new designs as the January 31 deadline approaches.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, the duly elected governor of Osun state has been sacked. The Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo has sacked the governor. It declared that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Adeleke and issued same to former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola. The tribunal in a split document of two to one gave this decision. Delivering its judgement on Friday, the tribunal held that the governorship election was characterized by over-voting, adding that after deducting the excessive votes, Oyetola’s figures rose to 314, 921, while Adeleke’s came down to 290, 266. The tribunal led by Justice Terste Kume, therefore, instructed INEC to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Adeleke and his deputy, Kola Adewusi. It directed that the certificate of return be issued to Oyetola instead.

Edo State is in the news as scores of travellers waiting to board a train from Igueben in Igueben Local Government Area of the state to Warri in Delta State, were kidnapped by suspected herdsmen, declared the Edo State Police Command on Saturday night. The Command, in a press statement endorsed by its spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor, at about 9.55pm, stated that the unfortunate incident happened at about 4.00pm on Saturday. The text of the statement reads: “This is to inform the gentlemen of the press that today, 7th of January, 2023 at about 1600hrs, unspecified number of Herdsmen armed with AK 47 riffles attacked the train station at Igueben, Edo State and kidnapped unspecified number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri. “The kidnappers who shot sporadically into the air before kidnapping some passengers left some persons with bullet wounds. On Friday, the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting (NSPM) Plc, responsible for printing the naira notes, explained why the new Naira notes leave ink when rubbed on plain white surfaces. In a statement on Friday, signed by NSPM’s Managing Director, Ahmed Halilu, as regards various clips, skits, concerns and comments on diverse platforms regarding the quality of the redesigned notes.
