EVERYDAY PEOPLE

THIS THING CALLED POVERTY!

A DIRE SITUATION!

Written By Janet Odidi Obuotor.

The Nigerian saying; "Poverty a bastard!" Is so so true.

Hello Poverty, the vast majority of Nigerians have fallen into your cruel embrace. Suddenly, without a warning, you made them sign the dotted lines of 'UNHOLY' wedlock.

Morning In Africa, An African Mother Going About Her Business For The Day - To Provide Food For Her Family.

Our Dear Elected Leaders, Poverty is real.

There is hunger in the land, many are impoverished.  The dichotomy between the 'haves' and the 'have not' is widening. There is an upsurge in job loss among the working class.

The business sector is also not spared, it suffers from;

1. A hostile business environment, made up of a lack of technical know-how and an extremely high cost of financing businesses.
2. A lack of funds for starting and sustaining businesses.
3. Poor electricity supply.

Simply put, basic infrastructure is absent.

Furthermore, corruption, inflation and poor legislation all play a role in stiffening the economy.

It is truly an alarming situation!

Nonetheless, the saying goes life must go on;
The house rent must be paid.
The electricity tariffs loom.
The water bills linger.
The gas must be provided.
The trash and sewer bills must be paid for proper waste disposal.
Subscriptions like cable TV, internet, security and phone services persist.
The tuition fees stare you in the eye.
Our bellies grumble for food.
What about medical care?

We are indeed trapped in an economic quagmire of confusion. Confused because the solutions to our Nation's woes seem so simple to achieve. Yet so difficult to implement.

As we step out in search of our daily bread, with hope for a better future, may our leaders step forward and do the right thing.

As we approach a New Year, a prayer to the creator we say:

"Our dear maker, never let this thing befall us, keep us financially, mentally, and emotionally stable, bless the work of our hands. Help us to provide and take care of our fellow humans in need. Keep it away from us, this thing called poverty."

Britain-ASDA Slashes Prices On Rice, Pasta And Baked Beans

Asda slashes prices on pasta, rice and baked beans to help ‘millions’ of Britain’s poorest families. Following a successful campaign by anti-poverty blogger and budget chef Jack Monroe, Asda has slashed the prices of hundreds of kitchen staples, helping "millions" of Brits. Last month Monroe, a former food bank user, urged supermarkets to make their cheapest food ranges more widely available after highlighting the inflation in key products such as rice and the removal of value ranges from the shelves in her local Asda in Essex. Her Twitter thread warning that official inflation figures "grossly underestimated" the impact of the current cost of living crisis on Britain's poorest families went viral and generated a media storm. In response, on Monday (February 7) Asda committed to stocking its full Smart Price and Farm Stores ranges in all of its stores and online. On Saturday (February 12), three and a half weeks after her viral Tweets, the campaigner, who has be...

Kobe Bryant Crash Photos Lawsuit, Vanessa Bryant Wins - Awarded $16m By Jury

  Kobe Bryant's widow has been awarded $16m (£13.6m) in damages over leaked graphic photos of the helicopter crash that killed the US basketball star and his daughter in 2020. Vanessa Bryant, 40, said she had panic attacks after learning images taken by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and firefighters had been shared. A federal jury now said the county must pay Mrs Bryant for emotional distress. Co-plaintiff Christopher Chester will be paid $15m. In the Vanessa Bryant‘s lawsuit against Los Angeles County, the jury ordered Los Angeles County to pay $31 million to the widow of Kobe Bryant and co-plaintiff Christopher Chester. The jury deliberated for less than four hours before coming to their decision, and according to multiple reports. The sum of $16 million was awarded to Vanessa and $15 million to Christopher — who lost his wife, Sarah, and 13-year-old daughter, Payton, in the same helicopter crash that killed Kobe and 13-year-old Gianna Bryant on Jan. 26, 2020.
