A Total Reversal, Reverse Electricity Tariff Cut Now, Demand Nigerians

On Monday, Nigerians are demanding a total reversal of electricity tariff cut - the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s reduction of the tariff payable by Band A customers from N225/kWh to N206.8/kWh. Organised labour, the Nigerian Bar Association and the House of Representatives, have also rejected the hike in tariff payable by about 1.9 million consumers. Subsidy on electricity was withdrawn completely from the tariff of consumers in the Band A category, which constitutes about 15 per cent of the total 12.82 million power consumers across the country. The Federal Government said it would save N1.5tn, as a result of the tariff hike, adding that Band A customers would enjoy up to 20 hours of power supply daily. The government took the decision which became effective on April 3, 2024. Organised labour has however issued a two-week ultimatum demanding the reversal of the tariff hike. Exchange Rate For Cargo Clearance Increased To N1,356/$ By The Federal Government

The Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria has raised the exchange rate for cargo clearance from N952/$ to N1.356 per dollar and the new rate has been reflected on the portal of the Nigeria Customs Service. A few weeks ago the rate was increased from N783/$ to N952/$. In November, the exchange rate for cargo clearance was raised from N757 per dollar to N783 per dollar, representing a 3.4 per cent increase, and was later raised from N783/$ to N952/$ in December.

Ban On Public Display Of Caskets - Anambra State

A law has been passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly on Thursday which bans the public display of caskets for fabrication and sale in the state.          The Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo By this law, all mortuary attendants are to report to the Ministry of Health on any corpse that has stayed beyond one month from the date it was deposited. The State seeks to control burial and funeral activities in the state. It cautioned that any person who violates the conditions will be fined N100,000 or six months imprisonment or both. Also, the new law warned against blocking roads and streets during burial ceremonies. It advised that this can only be done with permission from the appropriate Local Government Authority. further stipulated that all burial and funeral ceremonies of indigenous deceased persons in the state shall be registered with the town union of the deceased. Bureau De Change operators have announced shut down of operations in Abuja as a result of unavailability of the dollars,  The Chairman of the association, Abdullahi Dauran, made the announcement on Wednesday. N100m Ransom for Ekiti Schoolchildren, Teachers - Abductors Demand

Five pupils and four member of staff of the Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, were abducted by gunmen who waylaid their school bus conveying 25 pupils home after school hours, in the Emure community in Ekiti State. The kidnappers have demanded N100m ransom for the release of the nine victims who were taken away. The principal of the secondary section of the school, Boje Olanireti, has confirmed the demand for ransom by the kidnappers who abducted victims. Throwing more light on how the incident occurred, Olanireti explained that the kidnapping occurred about a five-minute drive from the school. CBN Injects US$500 Million Into Various Economic Sectors

A study from Sweden which has found that a blood test can detect the earliest stages of Alzheimer's disease, reports the BBC, while expansiating on it's report that;                   Image Credit: Scientific American   The Times says it could have "huge implications" for routinely screening the over-50s for their risk of the disease. The test - the paper reports - can detect the "proteins" which can cause Alzheimer's which build up in the brain for 10 to 15 years before symptoms start to show, and allowed researchers to assess how "likely" someone was to develop the disease. According to the Daily Express, the brand new diagnostic tool has been praised by experts as it may "ultimately bring us closer towards a cure for dementia". The Daily Telegraph takes the view the "simple and cheap method" can measure how likely people are to develop the illness up to 15 years before they show symptoms, citing research from the study.

Oscar Pistorius, known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fiber prosthetic legs, will be released from prison on Friday after receiving parole.
